The Vibrant Rioja Wine Team

Thanksgiving, Black Friday and football are three great reasons to love November! Whether you are hosting Thanksgiving in your home, or are invited to a party elsewhere, it’s about time to think about wine pairings for your holiday meal. When it comes to a dinner as big as Thanksgiving, selecting the right wine can be difficult.

Thanks to a mix of Mediterranean and Atlantic climates, Rioja wines are crisp and acidic, making them a perfect pairing for a richer meal. They also please many palates, as wines from Rioja combine the earthy character of Old World wines with the fruitiness of New World wines. So this year, give thanks and drink Spanish! If you do, send us a picture of your Thanksgiving meal paired with Rioja wine to You may be published in our next newsletter, and one lucky winner will win a dinner for two!

Wine Snobs Heart Rioja at Great Match New York

Dozens of “wine snobs” gathered at the Rioja booth at Wines from Spain’s Great Match New York tasting on October 6. In its 18th year, the Great Match event series is a unique opportunity to taste the best wines Spain has to offer, all in one place. We encouraged wine fans to snap a picture of their best wine geek impression for a chance to win Rioja wine. Check out the deserving winner yourself: We congratulate @NYCsidewalker for this convincing impersonation of a true wine snob!

Rioja Tip: Decanting

Decanting is often unnecessary for extended barrel-aged Riojas, such as Reservas and Gran ReservasThese wines leave most of their sediment in the barrel, and rarely have any sediment in the bottle. Next time you open a well-aged Rioja, you can pour it straight into the glass!

Rioja Recipe: Isabel's Vegetable Paella

The following recipe is from Penelope Casas, a frequent contributor to New York Times, Gourmet, Food & Wine, and Fine Cooking. She is also a consultant and lecturer on Spain, a guest speaker at the Smithsonian Institution and the National Geographic Society, and an adjunct professor at the New York University.

Arroz De Verduras De Isabel
(Isabel's Vegetable Paella)

2-1/2 cups vegetable or chicken broth
Salt, as needed
1/8 teaspoon crumbled saffron threads
1/4 cup olive oil
1/2 cup frozen baby lima beans
8 baby carrots (about 3 ounces), chopped
8 shiitake mushrooms, stems removed, coarsely chopped
1/4 pound green beans, trimmed, coarsely chopped
2 medium red bell peppers, cut into 1/2-inch squares
1 medium zucchini, cut into 1/2-inch cubes
1/2 cup canned chopped tomatoes
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 teaspoon sweet paprika, preferably smoked
1-1/4 cups Arborio or other short-grain rice

Preheat oven to 400°F. Taste broth and add salt to taste. In a 2-quart saucepan, bring the broth to a boil; stir in the saffron. Cover pan and remove from heat. In a large skillet or a 13-inch paella pan, over medium-high heat, heat the oil. Add the lima beans, carrots, mushrooms, green beans, red peppers and zucchini; stir-fry until vegetables begin to brown, about 6 minutes. Stir in tomatoes, garlic and paprika; cook one minute. Reduce heat to low; add the rice and stir to coat. Add broth and bring to a gentle boil. Cook, without stirring, 10 minutes. Transfer to the oven and cook, uncovered, 10 minutes. Remove from oven and tent loosely with foil; let stand 5 minutes. To make the socarrat crust, uncover and return pan to stove over medium-high heat. Cook without stirring 2 minutes, until a crust forms on the bottom, being careful not to burn. Serve, scraping up the crust with a metal spatula. Yield: 4 to 6 servings.

Serve with Rioja Reserva. Aged for a minimum of 12 months in oak and at least 24 in bottle before release, Rioja Reserva is the benchmark Rioja, the age category on which most bodegas stake their reputations.
