For Wine, Age Isn’t Just a Number

Rioja wines have many wonderful attributes, including their ability to age beautifully. Aging wine is a simple process with a big payoff, but it’s important to know which wines to choose. Food & Wine offers guides as well as suggestions for what wines to buy now and drink later. In these articles, “A Quick Guide to Wine Aging” and “5 Affordable Wines for Aging,” Food & Wine writers recommend Rioja 2010 Marqués de Murrieta Reserva Rioja, among others, as a wine perfect for aging that won’t break the bank.

Celebrating the Harvest, Rioja-Style

Harvest is here! Harvest season for Rioja typically takes place in September and October, where grapes are picked in more than 120,000 registered vineyard parcels. To celebrate, the town of Logroño, Spain hosts an annual week-long Rioja Grape Harvest Festival with traditional ceremonies such as “Pisado de la Uva” (foot-crushing of grapes) and the offering of the first Mostro (unfermented grape juice) to the patron saint, Virgen de Valvanera. The festival also serves up tasty regional cuisine along with parades, fireworks, music, dancing, and even bull-running. Of course, there are LOTS of Riojas on hand to drink. Cheers to harvest time!

Tempranillo Day is Coming!

November 12 marks the celebration of a grape near and dear to all those that love Rioja – the mighty Tempranillo. Tempranillo occupies more than 75% of the vineyards in Rioja. The finest expression of the Tempranillo grape is found in Rioja because the region’s cool growing conditions produce fruity, well-balanced wines (yum) with moderate alcohol and endless food pairing options. Don’t forget to raise a glass of #Rioja #wine on #Tempranillo Day!

Ask Ana header

I soon have to begin to rake my leaves and stock my wines for the fall season; what are some of the best Riojas for this time of year? - From Suzanne in Danbury, Connecticut

Ana: Autumn is upon us in the Northeast as the leaves slowly begin to fall and warm summer days are teased by cooler nights. I always look more to our savory Riojas for this time of year in the Crianza and Reserva categories. The Crianzas help me transition into the colder weather, and I try to stock up on ones with some spice and herbs. A few Crianzas that speak to this time of year are Puerta Vieja, Izadi, Ramon Bilbao Limited Edition, Viña Real and Ibericos. Also, 2010 vintages in either Crianzas or Reservas are in the marketplace now and drinking impressively
