Spanish Wines and Rioja Grow in U.S. Market

Bottle shipments of Spanish wines to the U.S. market have increased by more than a half million cases over the past two years, up to a total of 4.6 million cases. With shipments up 18% to approximately 1.1 million cases, wines from Rioja have contributed to this growth. According to the Consejo Regulador D.O.C.a. Rioja, the region places the strongest emphasis on educating the market about Rioja’s Reserva and Gran Reserva wines, which currently make up about 60% of the volume in the U.S. Typically priced between $20 and $50, these premium wines are most competitive because of their tremendous price to quality ratio, and they are ready to drink, yet can be kept in the cellar.

One Trip to Rioja and You’re in Love!

After visiting Rioja, i-Wine Review’s Mike Potashnik and Don Winkler featured their trip in the article, “Rioja Wine and Tapas,” in which they discussed touring Calle del Laurel and deliciously pairing Rioja wines with classic Spanish tapas. While exploring the beautiful wine region with her husband, San Jose Mercury News Laurie Daniel wrote the article, “Wine: 9 gorgeous summer rosé wines under $20,” which includes details of her travels and her love of pink wines, especially Rioja rosados. Lastly, Robin Kelley O’Connor, on behalf of Italian Wine Merchants, shared his experience on a Rioja trade trip in his article, “Rioja, Land of Enchantment and Well-Ordered Wine” posted on the retailer’s blog Inside IWM. Robin fondly proclaims, “I’ve always been a great fan of Rioja wines and this journey through the region only enhanced my position that Rioja makes the best wines in Spain and clearly shares the global stage with the other top wine-producing areas of Europe.”

Trade Trip to Rioja

During an unforgettable week of in-depth exploration through the Rioja region, Rioja team members recently led a group of top retailers, on-premise wine directors and Master Sommeliers (including the first American woman to earn this prestigious title) through the vineyards, castles and tasting rooms of Baja, Alta and Alavesa. The group visited 12 bodegas, ranging from small independent wineries to centenary giants. Cheers to a week well spent!
