Adult Beverage Sales Update

According to a recently-released report by food and beverage research firm Technomic Inc., adult beverage volume in restaurants, bars and other locations declined in 2013; the decline was seen more in restaurants and bars (1.3 percent) than in retail locations (.07 percent). The report, “Special Trends in Adult Beverage Report: 2014 State of the Industry” found that wine and spirits sales were flat on-premise, while beer declined. Also, looking at 2014 to date, harsh weather across the U.S. led to overall foodservice sales declining by 3-4 percent nationally, and 7-8 percent in weather-affected locations such as the Northeast, according to Technomic’s analysis. While overall drink sales are projected to remain challenged, Technomic predicts continued growth in whiskey, craft beer and domestic table wine.

Rioja in the “Times”: Los Angeles and New York

Rioja is feeling the love coast to coast! "Los Angeles Times’ S. Irene Virbila recommended a fresh and vibrant Rioja to pair with your favorite pizza-pie in her article, “11 wines to enjoy with pizza, whether it’s meat lovers night or a vegetable pie.” In The New York Times’ article “A Storm Washes Away Old Ideas on Wine,” Mr. DeLissio, longtime wine director at River Café, expressed that the joys of Rioja have opened his eyes, stating, “How great that you can get a 12-year-old aged wine for under $100!”

Rioja Takes New York!

Come and explore Rioja during the inaugura Rioja Week in New York City, beginning Saturday, April 26. Dozens of festivities will make a splash across the city and will culminate with the first-ever Rioja Wine & Tapas Festival on Saturday, May 3, in Brooklyn.

Rioja Week will kick off with tasting events, flights, food pairings and special discounts in restaurants and retail shops around New York City. Media and trade activities are also scheduled, including the largest Rioja Grand Tasting and Seminar ever in the history of Rioja in the U.S., where more than 80 wineries will showcase their wines at this top tier event.

The finale – the Rioja Wine & Tapas Festival – will allow guests to experience 200+vibrant wines from Rioja, 30+ top Rioja winemakers and representatives and 25 notable U.S. chefs who will create their interpretations of Rioja-inspired tapas. Guests will visit the Paella Garden, sample delicious hams at the Jamon Bar and savor some of Spain’s best cheeses in the Cheese Cave. During the seminars, Rioja experts will enlighten guests about the richness of the region. All lovers of wine and food are welcome at what is sure to be one of the best gastronomic parties of the year!

Boston Wine Expo

The Rioja team visited Massachusetts in February to showcase its award-winning wines at the Boston Wine Expo 2014, the largest wine expo in the world. Despite fierce winter storms throughout the weekend, thousands of attendees had the opportunity to taste top Rioja brands. Our partners at Blanchards Wines & Spirits joined us in pouring, with many of the Rioja wines on the show floor available at their stores. U.S. Trade Director Ana Fabiano led a select group of 50 Rioja enthusiasts through a more focused tasting of Riojas. The seminar culminated in a tasting of C.V.N.E.’s Imperial Gran Reserva 2004, Wine Spectator’s Wine of the Year.
