Celebrate International Tempranillo Day With Rioja

We love November! Not only do we get to enjoy the feast and day of thanks for Thanksgiving, but on November 14, we have the chance to celebrate our favorite varietal during International Tempranillo Day! The tempranillo grape is responsible for earthy cherry flavors and firm structure you associate with Rioja wines, and generally produces medium-bodied reds that are suitable for dishes of all kinds…especially turkey. So this November 14th, celebrate this grape of Spain by attending one of our tastings around the country or enjoy with friends and family at home or around town. We’d love to see how you are enjoying the day - post photos using #TempranilloDay, #Tempranillo or #RiojaBuzz and enjoy some tempranillo!

Need some Rioja for Thanksgiving? is offering a 10% discount on Rioja tempranillo wines when you purchase six or more bottles from November 11-16!

The Birthplace of Modern Spanish

We bet you didn’t know this! The Spanish language as we know it today was actually created in Rioja in the mid-eleventh century. Castilian, which is the primary dialect in Spain, is the native language of half a billion people in twenty countries. Developed at the Yuso monastery in Rioja, the language evolved from Latin introduced by the Romans during the Second Punic War. And did you know that Spanish is second only to Mandarin Chinese in its number of native speakers? Fascinante!

What do you love about wine?
That every single bottle has its own identity, story and the potential to evoke a moving experience when you drink it alongside good company. Many of my wonderful memories took place with a bottle of wine.
What’s your favorite part of working with wine? The challenge -- consistently thinking of new ways to make Rioja fun and dynamic. I also love helping consumers understand what is so special about the winemakers we represent and having the privilege of communicating this in constantly-adapting ways all over the U.S. I’ve learned to adjust the messaging every time and that keeps me on my toes.
It’s your last meal…what would you eat and drink? First, Champagne, a lobster or crab dish and something with mangos for dessert. Then my Mom's arroz con pollo with plantains, Colombian-style. Later on, something Middle Eastern, some sushi, some fish tacos and for the 2nd round of dessert, my Granny's rice pudding with an elegant back-vintage Rioja Gran Reserva. Yep, this is a very long meal!
Share your favorite cool, but random wine fact: I read recently that President Thomas Jefferson spent about 10% of his annual income on wine. That’s what I’m talking about!
