In his article, "Rioja Reserva," Snooth's Editor in Chief, Gregory del Piaz offered recommendations on top Rioja Reservas for the holidays, noting, in his words, "Rioja Reserva offers a unique opportunity to bring that something special to the table."

Gregory also notes that Rioja is one of the only wine regions that cellars and ages its wines to perfection before release. "There is no place else in the world where you can find wines like these. The wines of Rioja are aged for you at the winery and then put on sale when they are ready to drink. As if that in and of itself isn't reason enough to buy more Rioja Reserva, there is also the quality, which is pretty amazing at these price points."

The Reserva category was chosen over other age classifications because it "brings together a lovely mix of rich, vibrant fruit, plenty of spicy oak notes, and the incipient flavors and silky textures of extended aging." Gregory explains that the style of Rioja wines range from very modern to decidedly traditional. He states that, "this wide range of styles means that there's a great Rioja Reserva for almost every meal you have planned this holiday season. I wish to encourage you all to try a variety of these wines."

Rosado Event Trade Contest Winners Announced!
Vibrant Rioja is proud to announce the winners of our "They Say Rosé, WE SAY ROSADO" Retailer Contest that took place throughout the summer. Encouraging off-premise participants to increase awareness of the Rioja region and the diversity of its Rosados, retailers were asked to emphasize Rioja POS and branded, in-store signage, including floor stacks or other custom displays featuring Rioja Rosado producers. The Grand Prize winner was awarded a seat on a Vibrant Rioja Trade Trip in 2013. The second place prize was an overnight trip to New York City to attend a Vibrant Rioja event. Third place was awarded a $400 restaurant gift certificate.

Evolution Wine and Spirits We are excited to announce that Evolution Wines & Spirits took the Grand Prize! This Illinois retailer wowed Vibrant Rioja with their superb customer service and dedication to consumer education. Bern’s Fine Wines & Spirits in Florida placed a close second, creating a beautiful display and lengthy in-store feature with great opportunities to learn more about Rioja. In third place, New York City’s Columbus Circle Wine & Spirits displayed an attractive floor display, driving buzz about Rioja Rosados. Grape Field Rioja’s 2012 Harvest
The total production of the Rioja 2012 harvest came to 356 million kilograms of grapes, according to the first vintage assessment of the D.O.Ca. Rioja Control Board Technical Service. This is one of the lowest production figures in the last two decades and a significant drop compared to last year's harvest of 387 million kg.

The harvested grapes were in magnificent health and showed an excellent ripening balance between alcohol content and polyphenols, creating expectations of great quality for the vintage as a whole. The resulting wines promise to have good polyphenolic structure, making them particularly suitable for barrel ageing and extensive cellar time.

The Rioja region was beset by drought throughout the growing cycle, so the late September rain was particularly positive for the grapes, with a better final balance and increased production levels in a large number of vineyards. The 2012 harvest started in August and lasted through late October.

San Diego Rioja Event San Diego Food and Wine Festival
More than 20 different Riojas were showcased in sunny California in November, as part of a 5-day festival, San Diego Wine & Food on the Bay. The Rioja events kicked off on Thursday with a seminar on "Twenty-first Century Rioja Wines," led by Bonnie Graves of "Girl Meets Grape." The following day featured an exclusive "Private Vault" tasting, where a small but carefully curated selection of truly extraordinary Riojas were sampled. A final Grand Tasting on Saturday afternoon opened up Rioja wines to over 1000 wine lovers.
