About Vibrant Rioja:

Vibrant Rioja is a partnership between the governing body for wines from Rioja, Spain – called the Consejo Regulador de la Denominación de Origen Calificada Rioja – and Wines from Spain, under the auspices of the Spanish Institute for Foreign Trade (ICEX). Wine Notes: Shaking up the way wine is sold

Wine retailers have employed creative ideas to circumvent the economic crisis and lower the wine prices to consumers. One of the strategies is to counsel wineries to export their wines themselves, and also seek a direct importer/wholesaler, since importers and distributors represent a significant percentage on the final cost of wines. Another strategy is based on three goals: stay small and cheap, focusing on cheap wines and small-scale producers; stay light and loose, keeping the inventory low; and seek closeout deals, which have a good value for money. (Oregon Live News, August 2011)

Our Thoughts
Economic instabilities and uncertainties can be a great opportunity to innovate. Wine is considered a luxury, and consumers are not willing to buy expensive wines anymore – at least, not as often. So to turn wine into a product that can be part of the new consumers’ reality demands hard work and creativity. Focusing your sales on value wines, in the range of $10 to $15, and also from small producers, can be a strategy. Promotion is an important factor as well. Grab consumers’ attention by offering value wines they simply can’t refuse.

U.S. Wine Consumption Continues to Increase
The US economy is slowly recovering, and so is consumer confidence. Consumers are beginning to spend again, and it enhances the market competition. According to the Beverage Information Group's recently released 2011 Wine Handbook, overall wine consumption rose 2.1% to 303.1 million 9-liter cases in 2010. The weak dollar also resulted in a good market for exports. Domestics rose 3.0% to 229.4 million cases. For importers the scenario is not so favorable. Imported wines lost 0.9% to end the year at 73.6 million cases. In general, the wine industry has good perspectives as growth is expected to continue over the next five years. (PR Newswire, August 2011)

Our Thoughts

Even though consumption is on the rise, it doesn’t mean that consumers are willing to spend their hard-earned cash. Consumers are still wary of spending and when they do so, they are looking more for value. So remember to keep offering your customers with deals they can’t refuse!
