The Vibrant Rioja Wine Team

September has come and we all know what that means, right? Yeap, it’s almost the end of summer (cue in the tears). After working hard, waking up early, commuting, facing angry bosses (but not ours, we all think you’re great), long hours, elevators that don’t come, over-crowded public transportation, that mariachi band in the subway that won’t shut up at 8:30 am, etc. now it’s time to relax and enjoy the end of the summer drinking a good wine.

And since it’s Labor Day, make sure you grab your bottle of Rioja, good company (many believe that’s friends and family, but it’s open to interpretation) and celebrate! But don’t forget to go outside as fall is right around the corner, and you don’t want to miss the remaining sunny days.

Your hard work deserves a toast. Make it with Rioja!
Spotlight on Rioja: Rioja Bartender Challenge

We are presenting our first ever Rioja Pour Genius Bar Competition!

The competition is designed to showcase the versatility of Rioja wines, as well as to further immerse the competitors in the tradition, history and defining characteristics that make up the DOCa Rioja. This is a call to all mixologists to embrace Rioja and continue the rich history of wine by the glass.

Bartenders, be sure to enter here , read the competition rules, and check out the awesome Rioja Bar Guide from our friends the Tippling Brothers, which features some delicious wine cocktails. Enjoy!

Rioja Recipe: Rioja Poached Chorizo

The Rioja region has long been known for the delicious chorizos it produces.
Increasingly, chorizo from Rioja is becoming more readily available in most
specialty stores and many supermarkets in the United States.

Ingredients:
1 8-ounce piece of dried chorizo
1 750ml bottle of red Rioja
6 garlic cloves
1 bay leaf

Instructions:

  1. Slice chorizo into ¼-inch pieces.
  2. In 8 or 9 inch sauté pan over medium heat, combine chorizo, garlic, bay leaf and wine; cover and poach for 20 minutes. Remove cover; continue cooking, turning each piece of chorizo halfway through, until liquid has reduced by half, about 30 minutes.
  3. Remove bay leaf; transfer chorizo mixture to bowl. Serve immediately!

Yield: serves 4 as a side dish.

Rioja Pairing: Chorizo is garlicky, fatty and salty so it needs a wine with good acid and good fruit! This dish will stand up well to a wine that has seen more time in oak like a Reserva or Gran Reserva.

Chef Note: Be sure to use a dried chorizo when following this recipe. Although fresh chorizos are delicious, they are not appropriate for this preparation, as they will fall apart during the cooking process. This recipe can be prepared ahead of time and re-reheated before serving.
