Millennials Wine Consumption on the Rise

Young drinkers are consuming more wine than previous generations. Fox Business says companies are responding by creating and marketing wine to Millennials in ways that they hope will keep them interested. Of the people who drink wine at least once per week, 30 percent are Millennials (the majority of wine drinkers are still 55 and over). Technology plays an important role in this trend as the Internet makes information about grapes and wines more accessible. Millennials are also drinking wine in places other than traditional settings like restaurants and dinner parties, and they are looking for wines that are on the sweet side. Price is also important: the article says $20 is the most many Millennials are willing to spend on a bottle of wine.

Rioja has teamed up with online retailer Wine.com for a series of promotions. From November 11-16, Wine.com will offer a 10% discount on purchases of six or more bottles of Rioja tempranillo wines to celebrate International Tempranillo Day (November 14). To kick off the fall season, a promotion also ran in September for all Rioja wines. And this past summer, Wine.com showcased our “Rioja Tames the Flame” promotion, offering free shipping on six or more bottle orders and an online sweepstakes. What do you love about wine?
That every single bottle has its own identity, story and the potential to evoke a moving experience when you drink it alongside good company. Many of my wonderful memories took place with a bottle of wine.
What’s your favorite part of working with wine? The challenge -- consistently thinking of new ways to make Rioja fun and dynamic. I also love helping consumers understand what is so special about the winemakers we represent and having the privilege of communicating this in constantly-adapting ways all over the U.S. I’ve learned to adjust the messaging every time and that keeps me on my toes.
It’s your last meal…what would you eat and drink? First, Champagne, a lobster or crab dish and something with mangos for dessert. Then my Mom's arroz con pollo with plantains, Colombian-style. Later on, something Middle Eastern, some sushi, some fish tacos and for the 2nd round of dessert, my Granny's rice pudding with an elegant back-vintage Rioja Gran Reserva. Yep, this is a very long meal!
Share your favorite cool, but random wine fact: I read recently that President Thomas Jefferson spent about 10% of his annual income on wine. That’s what I’m talking about!

Williamsburg Welcomes Rioja

The inaugural “Taste Tradition food and spirits festival recently held at Colonial Williamsburg welcomed Rioja as one of its premier wine partners with tastings, pairings and a seminar led by Rioja Brand Ambassador Ana Fabiano. A full weekend of wine education and historically-themed dinners with a focus on the garden-to-guest experience made this memorable kick-off event a soon-to-be annual tradition. Rioja Thanksgiving Family Feast

Rioja hosted a Thanksgiving Family Feast for select media on October 17, putting a Spanish twist on a traditional Thanksgiving meal and showcasing the versatility and pairability of Rioja wines. Northeast Rioja Specialist Aaron Gordon hosted the dinner for food and lifestyle journalists, speaking about the region and the wines.

In October, Julio’s Liquors celebrated the pairing potential of Rioja wines with “An Evening of Rioja Wines: Dynamic, Diverse, Delicious!” The event highlighted Rioja’s ability to pair smartly with cuisine from all over the world. Eager amateurs and expert oenophiles alike took part in a food and wine lab where Middle Eastern spices, Italian rusticity and Asian aromatics were brought out (and brought together) by the excellence and versatility
of Rioja.
