Fall Into October With a Rioja Wine & Cheese Party

Wine and cheese

Feel that crisp air? Smell the smokiness of a distant fireplace? Fall’s anticipated arrival begs for the cork to pop on a smooth Rioja red? Better yet, pair your favorite bottle with an evening of good friends and good cheese! Need some pairing ideas? Try a mild brie with a Rioja blanco or Rosado, a young Havarti with a juicy Crianza, or an aged cheddar with a velvety Reserva or elegant Gran Reserva. Add fresh crusty bread, a tapas spread and some good music for the perfect gathering.

Catalan Flatbread with Caramelized Onions, Roasted Peppers, Anchovies, and Manchego Cheese

While bread with roasted toppings is a staple in the Italian kitchen, it is also a traditional and popular cooking style in Catalonia. Try this month’s Catalan flatbread recipe from celebrity chef José Andrés at your next fall gathering. Pair this recipe with a Rioja Gran Reserva, known for its hints of cedar, cigar box and wild berries. Enjoy!

Ever wonder who “we” are here at Rioja wines, and what we do? Each month in 2013, we will feature profiles of two Vibrant Rioja team members each month. Nice to meet you, too!

Lauren

Name: Lauren
Role:
Vibrant Rioja U.S. Campaign Manager
What do you love about wine?
I love that wine is a living thing. That it has a life cycle and changes with time – just like us. And of course I love how wine brings people together. Sharing a bottle with family and friends, old and new, is the best way to enjoy wine.
What’s your favorite part of working with wine?
Connecting curious wine lovers with the place, the people and the story behind every bottle.
It’s your last meal…what would you eat and drink?
I would savor a venison steak and roasted mushrooms paired with a flight of Rioja Reservas, then sip single malt scotch on a Lake Superior beach under the northern lights.
Share your favorite cool, but random wine fact:
Spain is the second largest producer and exporter of natural cork in the world (second only
to Portugal).

Nina

Name: Nina
Role:
Rioja Regional Specialist, West Coast
What do you love about wine?
Every single glass of wine we drink has been created with passion, artistry, and the pure goal of making us happy every day.
What’s your favorite part of working with wine?
I am helping the growers and winemakers build their businesses. Being part of the story that is centuries-old is an honor.
It’s your last meal…what would you eat and drink?
My husband's hand-baked baguettes, a plate of jamon and cheese with Fino Sherry, a seafood paella with a barrel fermented Rioja Blanco, thinly-sliced baby lamb chops with any Rioja Gran Reserva 2001!
Share your favorite cool, but random wine fact:
The turbulence of the planets from millions of years ago could end up with such delicacy, aroma and flavor in the glass. Terroir is amazing!
