U.S. Sommeliers Pass Advanced Exam

Twenty-six American sommeliers passed the Advanced Sommelier Exam, the third in a series of four increasingly challenging tests of wine knowledge and skill offered by the Court of Master Sommeliers. The exam, held in Palm Beach, FL from August 12-16, tested candidates understanding of wine theory, beverage service and tasting ability. The next step is the Court’s Master Sommelier Diploma Exam, which just 211 wine professionals worldwide have managed to pass. Read more here. Congratulations from Rioja!

Ever wonder who “we” are here at Rioja wines, and what we do? Each month in 2013, we will feature profiles of two Vibrant Rioja team members each month. Nice to meet you, too!

What do you love about wine?
I love that you can have the same grapes grown in different regions, and the end result is so vastly different. My wine “aha” moment was when I was just beginning in wine PR and working with a terroirist, who tasted through three wines, using a similar percentage of three grapes, yet all were from different regions. The wines each were beautiful in expression, flavor and scent, yet were all so diverse.
What’s your favorite part of working with wine?
Getting to taste amazing wines from all over the world! And the people – there are some pretty interesting people who work in wine.
It’s your last meal…what would you eat and drink?
It depends on the season: for fall, it would be Peking duck paired with a New Zealand Pinot Noir or a Rioja Cosecha that would be delicious with the fatty duck.
Share your favorite cool, but random wine fact.
Wine grapes are the most widely planted fruit crop in the world!

US Trade Director and DOCa Brand Ambassador
What do you love about wine?
The unique experience you hold forever every time you visit a bodega, have a glass of wine or open a bottle.
What’s your favorite part of working with wine?
The amazing professionals and people I have been able to meet and work with throughout many vintages.
It’s your last meal…what would you eat and drink?
Chorizo from Rioja, Serrano ham, white asparagus, Riojan Menestra, a Napolean and a classic Rioja Reserva.
Share your favorite cool, but random wine fact. The Castilian language was created in Rioja. Tempranillo Blanco is a mutation; Maturana Blanca
is not.
