Wine Industry Makes Gains in 2012

According to a report from Technomic, the wine industry gained 3.6% revenue to $32.3 billion, and had 2.2% growth in volume in 2012 despite shortage of supply and slow economy. Domestic table wines were mainly responsible for market growth, which was also driven by introduction of new wines. Around 240 new table wines were introduced in 2012, among which more than half were domestic. New wine flavors and products, such as premium boxed wine and fun flavored specialty wines, are effectively competing against other options such as spirits and craft beers by keeping consumers engaged and interested.

We Tamed the Flame!

Vibrant Rioja held a grilling event, Rioja Tames the Flame, on June 27 for press and trade at the trendy downtown NYC venue, The DL. The event highlighted the versatility of Rioja wines in summer festivities and entertaining, pairing Rioja Blancos, Rosados, Crianzas and Reservas with grilled, summertime foods, Rioja wine marinades and Rioja-inspired rubs from Chef John Keller, who had a live grill demo for press while well-known wine personality Steve Olson spoke about the wines. The event had over 30 food, beverage and lifestyle press, along with trade in attendance. Following the press portion, over 180 wine-savvy consumers joined the party with a live jazz band and delicious Rioja wines.

It’s your last meal…what would you eat and drink?
A perfectly grilled rib-eye steak, grilled asparagus and a tomato and burrata salad along with, of course, a lovely Rioja Reserva.
Share your favorite cool, but random wine fact.
I experience Alcohol Flush Reaction when I drink wine or spirits, causing my face and body to flush in response. Since I can’t drink much wine, it’s important what I can enjoy be of very good, consistent quality, like Rioja.

My love of travel, culture, food and the arts always includes wine — the ultimate pairing for great food and good conversation. And, every great civilization has and will forever make wine — usually in a beautiful environment. What's not to love?
What’s your favorite part of working with wine?
The people that create, produce, market and enjoy them.
It’s your last meal…what would you eat and drink?
First, a grilled hot dog with a scrumptious Crianza. Followed by raw oysters, grilled lobster, scallops and asparagus paired with a crisp, refreshing Rosado. Finished with a gilled NY Strip and grilled rosemary potatoes paired with a balanced and hearty Rioja Reserva. Then, a long nap!
Share your favorite cool, but random wine fact.
Almost all wine grapes produce clear juice. Red wines get their color from the skins during fermentation. White wines usually are fermented only from juice, and pink wines typically are made by removing the skins from partially fermented wines after a short period.

Rioja Kicks Off!

The Vibrant Rioja trade team recently held successful kick-off events throughout the country. Trade and press attended events in Minneapolis, Orlando, Los Angeles and Washington D.C. to taste Rioja wines with select food pairings. The Minneapolis event also included the Guinness Book of World Records record broken for most wine bottles opened (474 bottles) at the same time. All bottles were opened with Vibrant Rioja corkscrews…pretty cool!

Rioja in Aspen

The Rioja team made some noise at the crème-de-la-crème of culinary festivals, the FOOD & WINE Classic in Aspen. Affluent foodies and top chefs from around the world gathered to taste the best in food and wine. Rioja team members hosted eight events during the festival, mingling with wine and food celebrities and influentials including Mario Batali, José Andrés, Andrea Robinson and Rajat Parr.
