Somm: The Movie!

Need a cool, new wine flick this summer? Coming to a theater (or iTunes) near you, Somm is a new film written and directed by Jason Wise, documenting four men (including Dustin Wilson, the current wine director for Eleven Madison Park in New York City) as they prepare for the daunting Master Sommelier (MS) exam. Given only 201 sommeliers have passed the exam in more over 40 years, this documentary offers a great, behind-the-scenes peak into the pressures of the wine world!

Vibrant Rioja Trade Trip

There’s no better way to experience Rioja than first hand! Vibrant Rioja hosted a group of 10 on- and off-premise U.S. wine trade professionals for a week in the region to bring Rioja’s beauty and diversity to life. In addition to visiting and wine tasting through 14 wineries, the group also visited the fascinating Dinastía Vivanco wine museum, the ancient villages of Briones and Laguardia, and enjoyed lively tapas crawls on Calle Laurel. This incredible visit concluded with a stop by the Guggenheim museum in Bilbao, designed by famed architect, Frank Gehry.

Students Visit Rioja

Enrolled in the ‘Wines of the Old World’ curriculum, students from the School of Hospitality and Tourism at the University of Florida (USA) recently visited the University of La Rioja. Accompanied by Professor Chip Cassidy, the group toured the school and vineyards, attended tastings and a Viticulture class led by the director of the Department of Agriculture and Food. One of the students, Noelle Belli noted “The tour guide opened the cellar to let us walk through. Walking through was amazing; the deeper you went, the deeper you walked through the history of the vineyard.”

Role: Media Relations & Event Manager
What do you love about wine? I’d like to think you uncork happiness with every bottle of wine. There is truth in the saying that “no good story ever started with someone eating a salad.” Wine has a very social aspect, and I love that every bottle of wine presents the opportunity to spend quality time with family or friends.
What’s your favorite part of working with wine? Working with winemakers and sommeliers. In my next life, I want to be born as the daughter of a vintner. That’s a family business I would be passionate about. How amazing is it that one can just go in the cellar and pick a bottle of wine your grandparents made to go with dinner?
It’s your last meal…what would you eat and drink? I hail from Austria, so Wiener Schnitzel, German-style potato salad (vinegar instead of mayo) and apple strudel. My DNA demands me to drink Grüner Veltliner or Riesling with my meal, but I’d probably finish my last meal with a Semi-Dulce from Rioja.
Share your favorite cool, but random wine fact. With more than 1,700 acres of vineyards within the city limits, Vienna is one of Europe’s main wine capitals.

What do you love about wine? Everything. I love learning about it, talking about it, meeting interesting people in the industry and, of course, I love to drink it. Wine has been a part of my life since I was a little kid in Spain, since my dad was a collector. And yes, my dad used to put some drops of wine in my water (during lunch!) when I was young.
What’s your favorite part of working with wine? There is still so much to learn and so many interesting people to meet. I love the passion the people have in this industry - it is contagious.
It’s your last meal…what would you eat and drink? This is an interesting one for me: I would first have some nice lamb chops (my way! Friends and family rave about them) and then, after I finish eating, I would have an old (+25 years) Rioja Gran Reserva. I love to drink old Riojas by themselves, no food required.
Share your favorite cool, but random wine fact. Kevin Zraly, one of the best wine educators in the world, once told me that when planning a wine dinner, the wine should always be listed before the food on the menu, because the wine is the star. Also, he suggested the best wine to pair with your meal is whatever wine you like. No matter what! Totally agree with him. Salud!
