Pouring wine into glasses

According to the Wine Market Council (WMC) — an independent, nonprofit trade association — and The Nielsen Company, wine sales continued to grow in 2012 despite an ever-sluggish economy. Top findings include:

Wine drinkers are finding more occasions and locations to enjoy wine, including sports events, concerts and quick service restaurants.

Millennials (ages 21-36) continue to drive the growth of wine consumption, and the category overall. Although Boomers remain the largest demographic of wine consumers, Millennials drink more frequently, and consume more wine per occasion.

Wine drinkers in the U.S. are becoming more diverse, with higher rates of consumption among African American, Asian American, and Latino Americans.

The majority of wine drinkers order wine by the glass in on-premise establishments, versus less than half that order wine by the bottle, even at upscale restaurants. By-the-glass rates are higher for women, whereas by-the-bottle rates are higher for men.

Aaron Gordon Name: Aaron Gordon
Role: Rioja Regional Specialist, Northeast
What do you love about wine? It is an ever changing learning process where all of the scientific advances succumb to Mother Nature.
What’s your favorite part of working with wine? Each bottle tells a different story and each year is a new book.
It’s your last meal…what would you eat and drink? If it were my last meal, I would hope that I did not know, so I could relax and enjoy it. I would probably have a Negroni and fried oysters from Le Petite Crivette (Brooklyn). I would save my appetite for the big dinner party in the clouds.
Share your favorite cool, but random wine fact. California is the fourth-largest wine producer in the world, right after Spain!

Cassandra Bianco Name: Cassandra Bianco
Role: Media Relations + Social Media Ninja
What do you love about wine? I love learning. And I love how I am always learning something exciting about wine. Especially working for Rioja, when you represent the whole region! It’s truly an honor.
It’s your last meal…what would you eat and drink? I’m half Italian, and pasta is my life. I would eat a fresh sauce with penne pasta (Parmigiano-Reggiano is a must) with some Crianza. Dessert would be a Nutella pancake. Pancakes and pasta are almost as special as wine. Almost.
Share your favorite cool, but random wine fact. Did you know the Spanish language was born in Rioja? I think that is so cool!
