Global wine production will slump to the lowest in 37 years, according to the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV). World production fell in the past decade even as consumption rose, while drought, adverse weather and hailstorms harmed vines and grapes in southern Europe, and Argentina suffered weather damage to its vineyards. Output may fall to about 248.2 million hectoliters (6.56 billion gallons) this year from 264.2 million hectoliters in 2011, the lowest since 1975. According to Bertrand Girard, CEO of Groupe Val d'Orbieu, France's biggest wine cooperative, the wine shortage is the equivalent of 1.3 billion bottles.

Pour Genius Winners Announced
The Rioja "Pour Genius" program showcases the versatility of Rioja as a by-the-glass option, and immerses the bartending community in the tradition and history of the Rioja wine region. This year's program included a seminar led by Aaron Gordon of Vibrant Rioja at the Boothby Center in San Francisco, followed by a "Running of the Bartenders" scavenger hunt throughout the city, and capped off with a Gran Reserva party back, announcing the winners of the scavenger hunt.

Interview with Sommelier Brad Dixon
We recently spoke with Brad Dixon, sommelier of 15 years, currently at Bern's Steak House in Tampa, Florida:

Q: What is an interesting fact about your wine program?

A: Bern's Steak House hosts what is believed to be the world's largest private wine collection, with over 6,500 selections and 500,000 bottles in stock.

Q: What has inspired you to begin and continue in your wine career?

A: I've been in the hospitality industry for my entire adult life and have found that I enjoy sharing my love of wine and good food almost as much as I enjoy having it for myself.

Q: What is your most memorable wine moment and what did you drink?

A: There are so many memories working at a restaurant like Bern's, but the one that always comes to mind is having the opportunity to serve and try a 1937 Pierre Ponnelle Bonnes Mares.

Q: At an average, everyday restaurant with a very simple selection of wines, what is the best option?

A: Whatever's balanced and goes well with what I'm eating.

Q: Is it ok to order the least expensive wine on a list?

A: Of course! As long as it is drinking well, there's no need for price to define your selection.

Q: What makes a great wine list?

A: A list of food-friendly, fairly priced bottles.

Q: Are there any new trends in the drinks industry that you are seeing?

A: In addition to becoming more open to old world wines, my customers seem more and more interested in finding balanced, food-friendly wines.

Great Match Event

Spain's Great Match
Last month, Vibrant Rioja sampled dozens of wines at the 19th annual Great Match events, the most comprehensive tasting of Spanish wines in the country. Kicking off with hundreds of trade and media in NYC and Portland, OR, Steve Olson, a renowned wine and spirits educator, hosted a Rioja seminar on small production gems and exploring the more modern side of Rioja winemaking. The consumer event lasted late into the evening where wine lovers, new and experienced, were able to pair Rioja with delicious Spanish bites.

Wine, Tapas & Art at Vic & Anthony's Steakhouse in NYC
Working with long-time partner Landry's Group, Vibrant Rioja presented an elegant evening of wine, art, culture and gastronomy at the new Vic & Anthony's in New York City's Union Square on October 11. Featuring a book signing by The Wine Region of Rioja author Ana Fabiano, an eye popping exhibition of paintings by Rioja artist Luis Burgos and a stellar wine lineup from Beronia, El Coto, Muga, Dinastia Vivanco and Bodegas Riojanas, among others, the crowd was treated to a complete Riojan cultural immersion.
