Meet Harley Carbery: Director of Wine Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino Las Vegas, Nevada

What is your first memory of wine? When I first started working in hotels out in Eastern Canada, a few of us from the banquet team would spend many our days off exploring the wines available in the small town that we lived. This is where my love of wine began.

What is your most memorable experience with Rioja? My wife and I spent part of our honeymoon in Spain, because of this it will always hold a special place in my heart.

What are some of your favorite Rioja and food pairings? Paella, of course, is almost perfect but grilled meats can also make a nice Crianza sing.

You have a variety of fabulous restaurants at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino. Why does Rioja work across the various concepts? We offer a large array of dining options and I try to offer a similar array of wine options to go along with the food. Rioja works well in almost every restaurant we have on property due to its ability to pair well with so many different foods.

How do you introduce new wine drinkers to Rioja wines? I encourage them to keep an open mind; the wines are very approachable young and great with food. They are also a great value in the world of wine.

What advice would you give to young men and women who want to get into the wine industry? Taste as often as you can. Travel as often as you can. Have an open mind to all types of wines from around the world - every wine has its place.

What is the best part about working with wine in Las Vegas? The best part about working with wine in Las Vegas is the amount of amazing wine professionals that we have here and the wines we have the opportunity to sell and of course taste on a daily basis.
