Meet Cheryl…the Winner of our Trip to Rioja Sweepstakes!

2013
29 May
When Cheryl Cooperman of Florida was randomly selected as the winner of our “Win a Trip to Rioja” Sweepstakes, she was thrilled. However, Hurricane Sandy had just devastated her daughter’s home in New York, and she made the decision to forfeit her trip to Rioja prize, and take the cash equivalent instead in order to help rebuild her daughter’s home. Although Cheryl was not able to enjoy the Rioja region, the Vibrant Rioja team wanted to treat Cheryl to a special Rioja dinner which she enjoyed with her husband at Capital Grille in Florida. Here is our interview with her.

How did you feel when you found out you won the Trip to Rioja? Overjoyed and excited. I had never won anything before. I wanted to go on the trip...but family first.

Why did you decide to receive the cash prize instead of the trip? Hurricane Sandy made this decision for us. When it hit New York, my daughter was flooded. She lost all of her furniture and the inside of the house was totally destroyed. She could not live in the house for five months while it was being fixed up. This was extremely traumatic for my grandson who had to go to another school and not be with his friends. The whole situation was very stressful.

How were the winning funds utilized? I purchased bedroom furniture for my grandson and living room furniture for my daughter. The balance went towards fixing up the house.

How was your Rioja dinner, and what kind of wine did you drink? Our dinner was over the top. The food at Capital Grille was exceptional, and the wine that was recommended by the wine steward was spectacular. He recommended Hacienda Lopez de Haro Crianza 2008. What a great choice! We drank the whole bottle and savored it all.

What is your favorite thing about Rioja wines? Learning about new wines.

Anything else you’d like to say about Rioja or your experience? I wanted to thank you for your help. I especially wanted to personally thank Rioja Wines for their understanding and compassion that allowed a horrible situation to become one for all of us to fondly remember. It was a win-win for everyone. We have also found a new wine to enjoy, and will continue to do so at home.
