What are the best wines to serve a party with varied palates? How much wine should I buy? - James, San Francisco, CA

Ana: Hi James, excellent question! With spring around the corner, it’s a great time to think about entertaining. Every single bottle of Rioja is stamped with an official trust seal so you can feel at ease that your guests will experience a genuine, quality product and its pleasure on their palate. So rest assured they will have a great time with the wine!  Estimate about 1-2 4oz. glasses of wine per guest over a 2 hour period on average.

For that "wow” factor, consider Rioja Rosés. Rosés work with so many foods types but often are off the radar. There are very few things more pleasurable than a cool, crisp Rosé on a warm spring day. A red Crianza delivers so much more than most other options in this price category. With their extended barrel and bottle ageing and complexity that comes from select vineyards, Reservas of Rioja (many 2010 and 2011 in market now) will be sure to impress all your aspiring foodie guests.

I am attending a holiday party and would like to bring a bottle of Rioja but don’t know what the host usually drinks. What type of wine would you recomend that is easy drinking and goes with everything? - Tom from New Bedford, Massachusetts

Ana: The holidays are such a wonderful time to ponder what to serve, bring and gift! Top on my recommendation list for this time of year are always “Reservas of Rioja”.

They carry the burgundy back label and are released from bodega in their 4th year or beyond.  This makes them ready to drink or available for further cellar ageing and are truly a royal rich gift.  Rioja Reservas range in price from about $20-45 dollars and have had the greatest worldwide growth of any of our categories- so the proof in is the palate.  No other region anywhere in the world can compete with quality and price point as Rioja Reservas and we attribute their worldwide growth in part to this attractive truth.  I can recommend so very many that you may want to check with a trusted wine merchant, blog or my book for some stellar recommendations.  The fall and winter holidays are a great time to stock up on some favorite Rioja Reservas.

I enjoy rosé wines. Does Rioja make rosés? - Cindy,  Washington, D.C.

Ana: Great summer thought, Cindy!  Many people Love Rioja Rosados, and rosé wines are a booming in America. You do not have to live in states of an endless summer like California or Florida to create your own endless summers with Rioja Rosados.  Last winter at the Boston Wine Expo and 20 degrees outside our Rioja Rosados exhibit was on fire!  Our rosados embody  that essence of Rioja balance- fruit, acid, and a clean crisp experience on the palate that is  punctuated with a perfect  price.  Some sexy ones to explore are Valdemar, Viña Real, Izadi,  Ostatu, Riscal and the more juicy Marques de Caceres.
