“The Great Wines from Rioja” Seminar at Instituto Cervantes – Chicago, IL

With its centenary history, hundreds of wineries and dramatic new styles, Rioja is now more exciting and diverse than ever. This seminar will introduce participants to Rioja’s history, climate, soils, and grape varieties, including Tempranillo, the region’s best. Students will also get acquainted with the Rioja classification system, learn the latest developments and taste some of Rioja’s top wines, with a focuse on the distinctive Reserva, Gran Reserva and modern styles.

Born in Madrid, Instructor Helio San Miguel is the New York Correspondent of Club de Gourmets, Spain’s leading wine and food magazine, and has contributed to numerous publications in English and Spanish (, Wines from Spain News, Fodor’s,, etc.) He has been a wine writer and educator since 1995, consults for restaurants and importers, and serves as a judge in tasting panels. Since 1999 he teaches the Wine Program at the Instituto Cervantes in New York.
