  • Better positioning in markets and balanced development thanks to production capacity controls.

The Rioja Designation of Origin in 2016 progressed very positively, according to the conclusions of the 2016 Report published by the Control Board. President José María Daroca stated that “within the process of adaptation to the new legal framework represented by the 2015 Act on Designations of Origin, I have great faith in the continuity of a system of self-regulation and an organisational model that the consumer trusts, one that innovates constantly and offers profitability to grape growers and wineries, creating wealth for the whole region in the process.”

Of particular note are the rise in value for Rioja wine, the great impetus of sales of white wines (a good example of Rioja’s innovative potential) and increased specialisation in barrel-aged wine. The 2016 harvest also provided very satisfactory results, from both the quantitative and qualitative points of view.  Key promotional activities included the awarding of the Prestigio Rioja Prize to Eva Longoria, the launch of the global project to train 'official Rioja educators', and the launch of the first official application for mobile phones and tablets on wineries, wine and wine tourism.

On the final stretch of his mandate, the president was very pleased with the results attained, naming as a decisive factor “the united action of all the stakeholders in the sector that I put forward as a priority when I started my term.” For José María Daroca, one of the key decisions was “to control production capacity by limiting the expansion of vineyard surface area in the face of the threat of devaluation which the new European planting authorisation system poses for Rioja. This decision guarantees the continuity of our development model based on balance.”

This 80 page report provides comprehensive information on the current state of the Control Board and the activities it has carried out. It describes the composition and functioning of the institution’s management and control bodies, a summary of the most important decisions made by the Plenary and details on the use of the financial resources that fund the Board. In a prominent position are the activities of the Administration Service and the Controlling Body with regard to quality control, origin and ageing of wines, as well as a summary of the promotional activities carried out by the Control Board throughout the year. The report also includes information about the wine certification process and statistics on production and processing of the 2016 harvest, as well as the most significant details on vineyards, wineries, marketing, etc., all of which provides an overview of the progress of the D.O.Ca. Rioja in the last year and its current situation, making this compendium a useful reference work, available in PDF format on the official website of the Control Board www.riojawine.com.
