Centuries before the founding of Rome in the 8th century BCE, farmersaided by Phoenician traderstended vines and produced wine in what is now Spain. Later, after establishing territorial boots on this peninsula they named Hispania, the Romans focused more seriously on wine production.

Today Spain is the third largest wine exporting nation in the world (following France and Italy, and followed by the United States and Australia). According to a European commission report published last month, wine production in Spain has increased 14% since 2011, although domestic consumption has diminished (it decreased 21% between 2007 and 2015).

Higher ranked wines in terms of quality are provided with the classification DO (Denominación de Origen) or the higher ranked DOC/DOQ. The latter only applies to two regions of Spain: Rioja in the central north and Priorat in the northeast.
