This Family in a Medieval Town in Rioja is Producing Some of the Best Red Wine in the World

Heads were scratched, brows were furrowed, and WTF's were uttered by many American wine lovers when Wine Spectator named the 2004 CVNE Imperial Gran Reserva Rioja the top wine of 2013. Even among the lucky few who had heard of CNVE, there was some confusion as to how it was pronounced, or spelled. (CVNE is the not very euphonious acronym for Compañia Vinicola del Norte de España, the V being for convenience pronounced as a U, thus COO-nay.) I hadn't thought about, or tasted, CVNE for quite some time, though I'd visited the winery in Haro, the medieval town that is the wine capital of La Rioja, about 10 years ago, after having some great older vintages in the '90s.
