The 2007 Rioja vintage has been officially rated as "Very Good" by the Control Board after a strict assessment process involving testing and tasting 4,093 samples of the 272.8 million litres of wine that were finally approved and allowed to be protected by the D.O.Ca. Rioja. This assessment confirms the Control Board's initial expectations raised by the high quality of the grapes harvested in 2007, which already pointed to the possibility of making great wines of this vintage, it being particularly suitable for ageing in casks. The magnificent results are undoubtedly due to the good weather that prevailed during the last stages of grape ripening and during harvest, together with the great professionalism of Riojan grape growers and oenologists.
The total amount of grapes harvested from the 60,774 hectares in production in the Rioja wine region was 412.72 million kg, (375.09M kg of red grapes and 37.63M kg of white grapes), a production that was 2.2% lower than in 2006, despite having 400 more hectares of vineyards than last year. The Control Board finally approved 273.7 million litres of wine with another 7 million litres left as qualitative stocks -a new type of stocks created this year following an agreement reached by the Plenary of the Control Board aimed at setting up a mechanism that will enable a balanced development of the wine region.
The growth cycle was long this year and the harvest can be considered particularly long and selective; this benefited fruit quality and made the oenologists' work easier. Generally moderate yields reduced the need for green operations and cluster thinning. Harvest began on 3 September and concluded on 2 November. It was staggered and very selective, adapting to the ripening rate of each individual vineyard. The grapes arrived at the bodegas optimally ripe and the grapes collected were in excellent health, with a good balance between the various quality parameters -alcohol content, polyphenols and acidity.
